Understanding FIRE
The 4% Rule
The FIRE movement is based on the "4% rule" from the Trinity Study, which suggests you can withdraw 4% of your portfolio annually with a high probability of not running out of money over 30 years. Your FI number is simply your annual expenses divided by 0.04 (or 25x your annual expenses).
Savings Rate Matters Most
Your savings rate is the most important factor. Someone saving 50% of their income will reach FI much faster than someone saving 10%, regardless of income level. Every 10% increase in savings rate can cut years off your timeline.
Coast FIRE
Coast FIRE is when you've saved enough that compound growth alone will get you to your FI number by traditional retirement age (65). Once you reach Coast FIRE, you only need to cover current expenses - no more saving required.
